Commentary on the Theology of Martina Caffrey by Mike Garde BD, MA in Theology.
The purpose of this response is not primarily a theological one, but rather to address the cultist dimension which Ms Caffrey seems to have missed. Also in the absence of any official Catholic theological response we feel the need to enter this debate.
Martina Caffrey reviews the Messages received by Christina Gallagher for the people of Ireland and the world, spanning the last 25 years, from Our Lady Queen of Peace and from Her Son Jesus.
Messages of Love, Mercy and Repentance

We have matured as a country. We feel that we have evolved and developed in a greater way than previous generations. We feel that we have grown in knowledge so much that we know more about our world than other generations. We have outgrown the ‘superstitions’ of the past and have no need for such practices. We do not need religion especially the Catholic Church and God has been pushed to the fringes. The belief in God is still present but we have pushed Him into a box where He is a distant figure in our lives, someone to turn to or blame when everything goes wrong. However there is a vital flaw to this way of thinking which is that God is not a distant figure. He has always been present in the history of the world whether we believe in Him or not. God created our world and created us. We are the greatest part of His creation and He loves us as His children. He has shown this love down through human history when He sent His prophets to the people of Israel which culminated in sending His Son, Jesus Christ, as Our Saviour and thus entered physically into human history. Even when Jesus ascended into Heaven, having won our salvation and eternal life through His Death on the Cross and His Resurrection,
Here we find an orthodox expression of Catholicism but as one of our lay commentators Mick asked it seems to be totally unaware of the fact that Christina’s messages are totally beside the point. She is not recognised by the Archbishop of Tuam, Michael Neary and as a result has no standing. In other words she fails from the beginning as she has not demonstrated how we should accept the views of Christina as being Catholic. She just acts as if there is no problem when that is in fact what needs to be shown. Writing an MA thesis on the theology of the liturgy based on Pope Benedict XVI’s writings as Pope and Cardinal does not make her a Catholic theologian. I wonder if she has shared her views with her own bishop?
“Her academic research is into the theology of the liturgy based on Pope Benedict XVI’s writings as Pope and Cardinal, with a further book in the pipeline.”
He sent His apostles out into the world with a message of love, mercy and repentance. This message of Good News continued His own message of the coming of the Kingdom of Heaven and the need for repentance which He had preached during the three years of His public ministry.
We first note that her emphasis is on apostolic succession but there is no mention of the Holy Spirit as the Trinitarian response to the ascension of Jesus. The absence of the Holy Spirit leads to an unbalanced emphasis on Mariology, which becomes a Mariolatry.
Throughout the history of the Church, God has continued to reach out to humanity through chosen souls who have brought His message of love, mercy and repentance to the people of God and the world. God has often reached out to His children, especially through His Blessed Mother, Our Lady, at times of peril and danger both bodily and spiritually for His children. As our world has slipped more and more into sin, God has reached out to the world through Our Lady in more apparitions in the last century of the Church than in the previous two millennia. It is certain then that there is a greater need for the call of God to His people in our times than in any other previous generation. As we have turned away from God and religion, God has chosen to reach out to us in a proactive way calling us back to Him and asking us to repent. He offers His love and mercy and eternal salvation to those who hear Him, turn back to Him and accept His laws and commandments.
Here again we note this lack of Trinitarian theology and the immediate emphasis on Mariology and where Mary is in reality being made the Fourth member of the Trinity.
For more than 25 years, God has done just this in Ireland through the apparitions of His Blessed Mother to Christina Gallagher. God is reaching out to us through the messages given to Christina, asking us to repent and turn back to Him. We have become comfortable in our daily lives having pushed God aside until we decide when and how we will turn to Him in times of need and trouble and we feel uncomfortable hearing of what will happen to us if we persist in our sins.
We jump from the apostles and the focus of this theological reflection immediately focuses on Christina. This is in fact very unbalanced and in fact the God of Christina is a vindictive apocalyptic Manichean God that wants you to accept Christina’s teaching as the only way to survive the judgement. So in fact Christina’s private revelation becomes the public teaching of the Church. She along with her two theological advisers are the magisterium of the Prophet of Achill.
Like a people in denial, we don’t want to be challenged to change our lives even if it will give us a better world in which to live and raise our children. We turn away and refuse to listen to those who wish to disrupt our comfortable existence. This has happened throughout the history of our faith and it continues to happen in our treatment of the modern prophets. Just as prophets have been attacked and rejected in the past, Christina Gallagher has been submitted to brutal and very personal attacks by the media and the people of Ireland.
Like the prophets of Judah who were the paid servants of the kings Martina repeats the same old ramblings of Christina. No Christina is living the life of luxury and living a lie. Every time one of her new houses and wealth are discovered, she claims she has to have the luxury and ostentation because she is being hounded and stalked. Get real she has been shown to be a total scam and those who tasked with giving leadership to Catholics remain silent. She has the luxuries of her Jacuzzis and instead of bowing the knee and being baptised with the good news to the poor she has the audacity to claim she is the victim of persecution. She needs to become a prosecuted one.
Christina is the messenger chosen by God to warn us of the consequences of our actions but we are in a state of denial in this country and throughout the world and we do not wish to hear the words of God which threaten the bubble we have built around us in which God does not have a role. These attacks on Christina fulfil the words of Jesus in the Bible when He too was rejected and attacked not only in character but also bodily by those in His hometown of Nazareth to whom He first chose to reveal Himself as the Word Incarnate, the Son of God. On that occasion He said that a prophet is always rejected in his own home (Luke 4: 24) and this has proven true, especially in Ireland, when the reaction to Christina Gallagher’s mission to bring the message of God given through Our Lady was made public. For over 25 years she has struggled to bring the messages given to her to the people of Ireland and the world, only to be met with derision, slander and violent abuse. In our modern world where the media and internet have become so dominant, it is through these mediums that the stones are being cast from a ‘safe’ and sometimes anonymous distance. How many of those who attack Christina has actually read the messages which they so loudly condemn? Instead of relying on hearsay and gossip and ‘casting the first stone’, should we not first look at the messages which have been given and continue to be given to Christina to ascertain whether God may actually be using her to reach out to us and show us that He loves us and is still very much an active presence in our lives? In another place in the Bible, Jesus advises us that we would know His messengers by their actions, by the fruits of their labours (Matthew 7: 17-18). By looking at the messages given to Christina Gallagher, we can see that God has upheld and continues to uphold the truth of His message given to us by Our Blessed Mother.
Here Martina tries to make parallels between Jesus and Christina, and a reading of the text of Luke Ch 4 makes it very clear that Christina has no connection to what Jesus taught. She has succumbed to enriching herself and has not gone out to speak in public, but has hidden herself and refuses to actually address the issues raised about her. She has become a Prophet of profit and has turned away from the way of poverty, and obedience.
Filled with the Holy Spirit, Jesus left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the desert,
2 for forty days being put to the test by the devil. During that time he ate nothing and at the end he was hungry.
3 Then the devil said to him, ‘If you are Son of God, tell this stone to turn into a loaf.’
4 But Jesus replied, ‘Scripture says: Human beings live not on bread alone.’
5 Then leading him to a height, the devil showed him in a moment of time all the kingdoms of the world
6 and said to him, ‘I will give you all this power and their splendour, for it has been handed over to me, for me to give it to anyone I choose.
7 Do homage, then, to me, and it shall all be yours.’
8 But Jesus answered him, ‘Scripture says: You must do homage to the Lord your God, him alone you must serve.’
9 Then he led him to Jerusalem and set him on the parapet of the Temple. ‘If you are Son of God,’ he said to him, ‘throw yourself down from here,
10 for scripture says: He has given his angels orders about you, to guard you, and again:
11 They will carry you in their arms in case you trip over a stone.’
12 But Jesus answered him, ‘Scripture says: Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’
13 Having exhausted every way of putting him to the test, the devil left him, until the opportune moment.
14 Jesus, with the power of the Spirit in him, returned to Galilee; and his reputation spread throughout the countryside.
15 He taught in their synagogues and everyone glorified him.
16 He came to Nazara, where he had been brought up, and went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day as he usually did. He stood up to read,
17 and they handed him the scroll of the prophet Isaiah. Unrolling the scroll he found the place where it is written:
18 The spirit of the Lord is on me, for he has anointed me to bring the good news to the afflicted. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives, sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free,
19 to proclaim a year of favour from the Lord.
20 He then rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the assistant and sat down. And all eyes in the synagogue were fixed on him.
21 Then he began to speak to them, ‘This text is being fulfilled today even while you are listening.’
22 And he won the approval of all, and they were astonished by the gracious words that came from his lips. They said, ‘This is Joseph’s son, surely?’
23 But he replied, ‘No doubt you will quote me the saying, “Physician, heal yourself,” and tell me, “We have heard all that happened in Capernaum, do the same here in your own country.” ‘
24 And he went on, ‘In truth I tell you, no prophet is ever accepted in his own country.
25 ‘There were many widows in Israel, I can assure you, in Elijah’s day, when heaven remained shut for three years and six months and a great famine raged throughout the land,
26 but Elijah was not sent to any one of these: he was sent to a widow at Zarephath, a town in Sidonia.
27 And in the prophet Elisha’s time there were many suffering from virulent skin-diseases in Israel, but none of these was cured — only Naaman the Syrian.’
28 When they heard this everyone in the synagogue was enraged.
29 They sprang to their feet and hustled him out of the town; and they took him up to the brow of the hill their town was built on, intending to throw him off the cliff,
30 but he passed straight through the crowd and walked away.
31 He went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and taught them on the Sabbath.
32 And his teaching made a deep impression on them because his word carried authority.
33 In the synagogue there was a man possessed by the spirit of an unclean devil, and he shouted at the top of his voice,
34 ‘Ha! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are: the Holy One of God.’
35 But Jesus rebuked it, saying, ‘Be quiet! Come out of him!’ And the devil, throwing the man into the middle, went out of him without hurting him at all.
36 Astonishment seized them and they were all saying to one another, ‘What is it in his words? He gives orders to unclean spirits with authority and power and they come out.’
37 And the news of him travelled all through the surrounding countryside.
38 Leaving the synagogue he went to Simon’s house. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was in the grip of a high fever and they asked him to do something for her.
39 Standing over her he rebuked the fever and it left her. And she immediately got up and began to serve them.
40 At sunset all those who had friends suffering from diseases of one kind or another brought them to him, and laying his hands on each he cured them.
41 Devils too came out of many people, shouting, ‘You are the Son of God.’ But he warned them and would not allow them to speak because they knew that he was the Christ.
42 When daylight came he left the house and made his way to a lonely place. The crowds went to look for him, and when they had caught up with him they wanted to prevent him leaving them,
43 but he answered, ‘I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns too, because that is what I was sent to do.’
44 And he continued his proclamation in the synagogues of Judaea.
The Church’s position on private revelation states that the faithful are free to promote the messages as long as the content of the messages does not constitute a danger to faith and morals. In an examination of the messages given to Christina Gallagher, even a cursory glance will tell us that there is no danger within these messages and that there is in fact a strong theological and scriptural basis in the messages which point to the Truth of the apparitions. This is all the more evident when Christina’s life story is compared with the messages and we find it highly improbable that a relatively uneducated woman who left school early, barely able to read and write, could invent such theologically in-depth messages and knowledge as Christina has displayed on many an occasion.
It seems likely that the methodology employed by Martina is to defend the messages before she has examined them herself the very thing she has claimed others are not doing. Just because the Catholic Church allows private revelation does not mean that what Christina’s messages should be taken with any seriousness especially when she has ignored the principle interpreter and authority in her diocese, namely the Archbishop of Tuam. The continued rebellion and avoidance of authority by her and her so called spiritual director who is also in flagrant disobedience to the Archbishop of Tuam is mind blowing. Also the failure of the Cardinal to exercise any spiritual discipline over this priest is an open wound in the Catholic Church in Ireland.
This is attributed to the grace of God who gives Christina infused knowledge on deeply theological matters which help to speak towards the divine origin of the apparitions and messages given to Christina. She has also the grace of being able to read souls, to see the state of that soul as God sees them, a gift which Padre Pio was also granted, and which has been demonstrated by Christina to many priests who have testified to its accuracy. The gift to the faithful of the messages from Our Lady is beyond measure as She has warned us of coming dangers to our bodies and souls which have been and will continue to be fulfilled in the future.
All this is pretty irrelevant while Christina and McGinnity are in rebellion. If Ms Caffrey is knowingly involved in this conspiracy then she is in grave danger spiritually.
She has also reminded us of the immense love and mercy which God the Father has for each one of us. Christina has often been criticised in the media for passing on messages of ‘doom and gloom’ which are claimed to show an angry, vengeful God and are given with the intent to scare people. A look at the messages published by Christina and her spiritual director, Fr. McGinnity, shows just how inaccurate this interpretation is by those who do not wish to understand.
We note again that not one single quote is produced to support her case, and what we have heard from eye witnesses is that simony is being practiced namely the promise of eternal life, and the escape of the judgement to come by purchasing pictures and by giving money for what is in fact the purchase of further properties. The Texas house was already referenced by Mick, but what is fact being taught is a sub Christian message and it is centred on the person of Christina with her mediator Gerard McGinnity under the guise of coming from Mary and neglecting the one mediator between God and Man, Christ Jesus. If Ms Caffrey has studied Cardinal Ratzinger as she claims he is about proclaiming this Christ of public revelation and not this pseudo gospel of Co-Redemption.
In the messages, we see a loving Mother pleading with Her children to repent and turn away from sin. They are messages of love and mercy which warn of the justice of God which will come upon us if we do not repent of our sins and turn back to God. The common theme of the messages given to Christina is to repent and turn away from sin, to turn back to God in prayer and fasting, to help others to turn to God and find their salvation and a warning that God’s justice will come on those who refuse to repent as sin and evil will be wiped away. God has given us free will to choose for ourselves and these messages are a plea from a loving Mother to choose wisely, to choose God rather than the Evil One.
Through a study of the messages given to Christina, it is evident that God is truly present here and that these messages are of divine origin. By looking at these messages in more detail, we can see several different ways in which the Truth of God shines through to help us to believe in the truth and authenticity of these messages.
We would expect a detailed review and referencing of the messages but what we have here is a Bord Failte propaganda piece for Achill.
