Victory Church reopening, saving face or a new dawn?

Our sources are telling us that a deal has been struck between the receivers and the oversight of Victory Church Tallaght. The deal, details of which are not yet known will see The Victory Centre reopen for business on or around the 17th November this year.

Worship at Victory

It is likely that many members will feel vindicated, and see this is as a heaven sent Victory, but is is important to remember that many questions which were raised by members, ex-members and concerned observers have gone unanswered. These included questions about financial irregularities, lavish lifestyles of leadership and families and a host of questions about which gospel exactly was being preached. There are also the issues around the business ventures entered into by the Hades and Gerry Byrne which relate to asylum centres and the provision of housing within the Dublin and South County Dublin council areas. There are also other cases involving business which would be a problem for a person in a private capacity to be involved with but when these were embarked upon while at the same time as holding office in a Church raise even more serious ethical concerns. There is a real and substantial conflict of interest.Pastors Gerry Byrne, Sheila Hade and Brendan Hade

It will be interesting to know how the deal was struck, a number of possibilities could have occurred.

1. A white knight has entered the fray and taken on and guaranteed the debts.
2. Additional assets have been found and given as security.
3 A flaw in the banks paperwork has created a loop hole.
4 A deal has been done whereby the least marketable property, that is a purpose built church has been released and all other assets taken, leaving the cash cow to fund the reduced debt.
5 personal guarantees have been given by a whole new group of players.
6 the charity commissioners reinstated and paid outstanding monies to them.

Firhouse

What we refer to is that the Victory Centre in Firhouse though it appears to be a great asset it is in practice a white elephant in the current financial situation. It was purpose built in an area not chosen because it was part of a strategy to evangelise in the area but rather because they had a valuable asset in the area. So with the glut of hotels and with a National Conference Centre its likely use was as a warehouse. The Bank of Scotland saw that it was best to give it to the devil they knew rather than to hold out for a new buyer.

More likely there are still issues around the issue of Charitable status which will not come into the public domain till they reach court. What is clear is that they will not have access to the profits from a restaurant, Starbucks outlet or a major recording studio facility or conference and music venue anymore. Whereas,  these could be provided at rock bottom prices before they will be on an equal playing field with other commercial entities. Before all these activities could be hidden under a charitable umbrella.

Since these events emerged in June there has been a considerable loss of members and we are reliably informed the numbers at the Red Cow are around 400, and the majority White Irish members involved for over 20 years seem to have left leaving the Church now with a majority of Black Irish and immigrants. Though some will be professionals the majority would not be able to sustain such a plant. Maintaining the building without charitable status will be difficult and this will intensify the need to seek tithes and offerings for a building increasingly beyond the means of the current membership.

Also as is usual within the Evangelical community there is a lot of Christian tourism and it is likely that other churches like St Marks and ‘Core,’ St Catherine’s Thomas Street have benefited from the current difficulties at Victory.

This usually results in the issues which are not addressed by the Churches they come from are brought into the new situation? Preaching about tithing, prosperity and the miraculous are expected and solid biblical teaching is diluted and an emphasis on the experiential are focused on.

Whatever the structure it will be interesting to see if its back to business as usual or have lessons been learned. The legal battles of the pastors outside of this situation continue, and will no doubt be adding pressure.

We will watch this one closely.

  11. THE HADES AND GERRY BYRNE HAVE A SERIOUS CASE OF FRAUD HANGING OVER THEM BROUGHT ABOUT BY AN EX MEMBER OF VICTORY AND TWO BUSINESS MEN. THERE IS, I BELIEVE, ANOTHER CASE CURRENTLY BEFORE THE COURTS INVOLVING TWO ELDERLY WOMEN FROM CARLOW WHO ALLEDGE FRAUDULENT BEHAVIOUR BY THE HADES OVER A BOTCHED LAND DEAL. SO CALLED PASTORS WHO PURPORT TO GUIDE PEOPLE TOWARDS SALVATION WOULD BE FAR BETTER OFF SEEKING A SOLUTION TO THE ABOVE AND ALLOW GOD TO RESTORE IN THEM A MODICUM OF DECENTCY.

  12. @misty, while I agree that that the Hades and Byrne have not got their ‘house’ in house in order. It does not that mean that God hasn’t been working in them to get their ‘house’ in order. After all you look at most of the people God used in the bible a lot of them fell away from God will however when they repented God still used them. I know what they have done is against bibical teaching however I still feel it’s possible that they can turn the situation around now that they have a second chance. Only time will tell if this is the case, but while we are watching to see if repentance has happened its important for those who have been hurt by them to walk in forgiveness and pray Gods will into that situation.

  14. How can the hades and byrne continue to minister when clearly their “house” is not in order as by Gods teaching before you can minister to others? How do they react to the 10 commandments-Thou shalt not Steal; thou shall not have other false gods before me(money)

  15. It’s hard to say how long they will last. It is possible that God has given them a second chance and for that yes people should ‘thank God’ as the person above wrote I say this because that building does have the potential to help those in need I.e a state of the art kitchen that could be used to prepare meals for homeless etc. However I just hope that they have learned from their mistakes, stop allowing events take place that should never happen in the house of God, stop teaching false doctrine and change the way they run their own personal business.
