The Modern Mystery School and the cult issue which does not seem to be going away!

The Modern Mystery School have felt the need to deny that they are a cult on their website and list their reasons why this description does not apply to them. From my limited experience I am aware that people are free to come, take classes and leave. However, I am also aware of people being put under pressure to take more and more classes and also told how important and vital the work and teachings of the school, are in the future safety of humankind. I have known people who have spent thousands of Euro on courses to the detriment of their financial security and to deny themselves basics in order to do so. At this level I definitely feel there is an element of cultism involved. It is puerile to say that people are free to leave when you are telling them that it is all hands on deck and those who leave will be left floating in a vast ocean of wilderness without the school. There are plenty of examples of psychological pressures being put on people that I am aware of and this is a fundamental element of cultist behaviour.

The more that I have looked at this the more I have come across people whose relationships have broken down as a result of the involvement of one of the partners in the School. From personal experience I would recognise that the involvement in the school may not be the single factor that broke those relationships but intense involvement in the school has such dramatic effects on the individuals, time, finances and alters the view of the world to such an extent that if there are cracks in the relationship (very few have none), then these can easily become chasms due to the pressures involved. What is very disturbing is that where the partner outside of the school questions the involvement, the thinking, the practises or the impact it may have on the relationship or the family this is seen as evidence of the work of Satan/evil/darkness that the school warn you of. Very early on in your involvement they will say that you will be challenged by those you love and love you. They will explain that this is how darkness works to keep you from reaching the full potential that only the school can lead you to. When this thought process becomes true for the person involved then the result is serious for the relationship as any expressions of concern can then be dismissed as the work of the devil. They also say that humankind is in peril (it may well be) and only the school through it’s work and rituals has the answers to save us. They will tell participants of their special talents and that they can assist them to develop them for the good of the world. This produces such an inflated sense of the individual’s importance in the destiny of the world that they feel they must ignore obstacles so insignificant as their relationships, friends, finances etc. as the work is too important. The evangelical enthusiasm for the school I have seen from participants is sycophantic to say the least. Whether or not this is in its strictest sense a cult or not is arguable, however the workings of the messages on the minds of participants mean the effects of cultism are very real for the participants of the school.

By its nature the School is full of Mystery and secrets. These are not sustainable in most marriages or relationships and can have cancerous effects on the relationship. The cost of pursuing the courses is unsustainable for most ordinary people but may well be within the reach of the more well heeled. However, from my experience, the School at a certain level does put pressure on individuals to attend its classes. It has a all hands on deck mentality, it does implore people that if they are not making a success in their lives that it is their fault and the fault of the people around them rather than any failing in the teachings of the school.

I have tried in as many ways as I can (admittedly limited) to find credible information about the Mystery School and its leader. This has proven to be to be a difficult challenge. I have serious concerns regarding the credibility of the Leader Gudni Gudnason and his claims to be a PhD which I have not been able to verify through online research.

https://dialogueireland.wordpress.com/2011/11/24/dr-who-gudni-gudnason-more-on-the-the-modern-mystery-school-cult-or-just-blarney/

It would be wonderful if Gudni and the other leaders having taken the step of bringing the Mysteries to the masses could also take the step of being fully open and transparent regarding their own learning. We can all claim, like Gudni, to have graduated from the ‘School of Life’ and while this allows us to make comment and gossip it does not allow us to set ourselves up as master teachers or practitioners and demand large sums of money and obedience from others.

In my experience there are those for whom the School experience would not be described as negative, and there are those for whom the involvement has been a catalyst for a complete breakdown in their lives and those around them. The School would no doubt argue that this was a necessary transformation for those individuals, but the only winner here is the school.

  2. Dear DI: Gudni got his PhD from an online degree mill called the University of Metaphysics. You’ll find it if you dig deep enough on Google. He also claimed to have read business or psychology at university (the exact topic kept changing), but good luck finding proof of that.

Other empty claims: he’s a baron (though Iceland abolished noble titles centuries ago) and received awards from organisations that don’t exist. His biography is full of holes.

You seem like the usual naïve victim this cult attracts. In your ignorance you want to assure readers that “Never once did anything evil come up. We talked about how to combat evil.” Why would the course include talking about combatting evil if you are not expected to deal with it as you progress in the classes?

You say: “My friend did explain the structure of the teachings to us and encouraged us to take specific classes based on certain questions we asked, but did not push anything upon us.”

It sounds to me you are in the ‘right’ brained, very susceptible, frame of mind to accept her encouragement. Are you aware that the cultic mind-set of MMS will separate you from the mainstream, even sever ties with family and potential advancement in life you may have considered before? Have you any idea of how the technique of hypnosis/subtle seduction is used in MMS? Does your ‘friend’ understand or has she mentioned the mind-bending techniques that have led to psychological harm being done to numerous people who have attended MMS?

You make a point of reassurance that MMS do not interfere with previous religious beliefs: You say: “In fact, we talked about Jesus Christ being our God of choice.”

How do you reconcile what you are studying with the life of Jesus? Are you grounded sufficiently to know whether the Jesus they refer to is the one of your “choice”? No doubt the garden path you are led to follow is full of roses with hidden thorns, however, there are plenty of ‘christ-like scapegoats’ that need to respond to your commend. You may not like what they say, however, it will save you a lot of mental anguish in the long run as it is down right foolish to believe that you can walk in someone else’s shoes.

So your ‘friend’ “left it completely open when we were initiated to do what we want with it.”

Since you are now “initiated” it would seem you are primed to take the “specific classes” that will cost more money and, if you had read the comments on this blog you should know that the “specific classes” are never-ending.

Putting a ‘positive’ note on it when informing us of how intelligent you already are: “I can also say that my life has not been the same in a positive way since my life activation and this empower thyself reaffirmed some things I already thought and believed, as well as gave me some new tools to use.”

If you feel “empowered” already why not leave it at that and get on with your life? If something is not broken you don’t fix it!

  10. Hi! First off, thank you for sharing your thoughts and experience. A dear friend of mine recently offered a class and I had never been involved in MMS or anything related to know anything about the class. When I googled, your blog came up. Anyway, I have to share that the class was incredible. I was there with people I know outside MMS and trust, and we even talked about the perception and view some have of MMS and any practices related to spirituality and growth. We had a few laughs too about it. My conclusion is it is what you make of it. I now have several tools I can use for positive thinking and utilizing my positive energy (which I had even before the class by the way). Never once did anything evil come up. We talked about how to combat evil. In fact, we talked about Jesus Christ being our God of choice. My friend did explain the structure of the teachings to us and encouraged us to take specific classes based on certain questions we asked, but did not push anything upon us. She left it completely open when we were initiated to do what we want with it. I think knowing and trusting the person who is speaking with you about it is key. I can only speak for my friend and am not sure what others’ intentions are out there so I do say if you get any pushy vibes or negativity from them, not to pursue it. I can also say that my life has not been the same in a positive way since my life activation and this empower thyself reaffirmed some things I already thought and believed, as well as gave me some new tools to use. No kool-aid or orgies, I promise.

  15. Bravo to you cuddlesbear for leaving. They teach that everyday human emotions like compassion for a family member in trouble are an obstacle to the “great work” so there’s a lovely irony there. I got out years ago (I was kicked out as a scapegoat, an old trick evidently used for eons by priests, generals, corporates and self-styled magicians … All of which fit gudni to a tee now that I think about it. It is supposed to reduce the politics and bullshit in the ranks and so unifies the masses for whatever said leader wants to get up to.) I mention that as a disclaimer when I say it’s been fully seven years this month and I can confidently say I am over it. It took a long time but I’m fully back in my skin and loving life. It was so difficult on so many levels but fundamentally, I no longer hold any more strange beliefs such as I am a kumara from RA (they convinced me of this even tho I never, ever wanted to believe it …) And that someone else, in fact my scapegoater in cape town called leona, is archangel michael!!! She’s a feisty recruiter and was causing shit so my removal settled her and her circle down (as another aside, I see she’s been demoted as country CEO and for anyone who doesn’t know my country well, you may be interested to learn that the new ceo lives in the city of gold, where there is far far far more money-making potential for GG than die visdorp). The main thing is that I no longer believe these things and so my life has settled down. Everyone who goes down the garden path with that cult is affected on some level by the “I am chosen for this and I am special” vibe because that’s what’s you’re beefed up with. I certainly had the hook implanted deep down because I knew no better. In fact I desperately needed validation about my worth but come on !!! Instead I lit the little match girl’s second-last last match. Now… my life is not perfect, but I have a cute home in a beautiful place but some days I get demotivated with the business I have started and I like to lie in bed and read all day. Sometimes I gossip with the locals and then I feel a little guilty. Sometimes I shop too much and sometimes I eat too much. Sometimes I binge watch Hart of Dixie. In short, I am normal. But mostly I am an integrated, happy, healthy person who takes long walks on the beach and sometimes goes to evansong and has no strange beliefs. I have some great friends I’m grateful for and I’m pretty good at not placing expectations on them. Life is tough, imperfect and beautiful, just like me … Just the way it’s meant to be. Sometimes, years back, I used to delude myself that I was going through some kind of advanced initiation outside the regular “paths” within the school because I so wanted to be a part of it. Now that I’m recovered I know I have simply managed to integrate some real parts of myself, which was precisely why I joined in the first place but no thanks to them. Before I could get to my own stuff that was surfacing a full 10 years ago, I had to confront, allow and feel my way through all their scary bullshit. But I no longer (hardly ever) have PT episodes where I think evil aliens are down at the pub when really there’s just wackos down at the pub. All that has wasted years but oh well, what can you do. It’s like another girl once said… she got involved with some weird spiritual shit and eventually she managed to “close the doors to her mind that had been opened due to her irresponsible activities” thanks to help from some support. Now she’s happy with the simple things in life, sitting in the sun on the veranda, a job at a shop. I can relate to that. I see, cuddlesbear, you still u use the term “know thyself”, which u will become aware is cult indoctrination as u go forward. Soon you’ll find yourself saying, I’m cool man, I’m good. Know thyself, my ass. All that flowery language will fall by the wayside and you’ll have relief. Ironically, at the dialogue ireland site I learned the only constructive lesson of the whole palavar. I learned how cults work and how any group of three can exhibit cultish tendencies (think Heathers) and how all groups, church, work, clubs etc., exhibit these effects to some extent or another. This revelation was a giant step for me because I now know the roles I used to play in disfuntional groups and while I have an active social life I know how to avoid serious cult energy pronto without compromising my interests. This knowledge has been life-changing for me. Thanks dialogue ireland. And in fact, interchange with DI allowed the penny to drop on another matter. I never had a great relationship with my dad and after I stopped being so terrified of stuff from MS I realised that gudni had put another nail in the “I don’t trust men” coffin. After MS I used to seek out intelligent men who were interested in engaging with my unique experience and scintilating prose and I would set them up to dump all my rage and fury at gudni on. I didn’t know I was doing this but because he shut me off (thank u God! ) that’s exactly what I was doing. I did this to someone here, but soon afterwards I got in touch with some of my real feelings around my betrayal complex with daddio, which after all led me to the Grand Betrayer in the first place. Sorry DI, I realise now I did it to you, to basil wilby (aka gareth knight, who also helped me a lot, advising me right at the get-go to have nothing more to do with the group ever), a high lama and to a chief rabbi. So you’re in good company although I must say they all cut me off well before you… But it was your continued engagement for a little longer that allowed my disfuctional pattern to surface in my consciousness because I was quite horrified with myself after all that. I’ve processed a lot of that now. I’ve even met someone now, a calm, conservation-scientist type who taps into another side of my personality and is actually available, not a celibate on the other side of the world, for example, tho we’re taking it slow, (very scary for me because of course gudni said to me, I am never allowed to have sex again because I am the bride of Christ and the keeper of the grail. YES!). You helped and I love free therapy so thanks! Anyway, I suppose I’m not entirely over things because this news out of iraq is affecting me now and I have to work (for money) with that material. I even went to gudni’s facebook feed and I see he is teaching a course on “meta-medicine” of the future and of course making money from it, while there are disgusting photos of him getting his teeth capped and also modern medicine scans from something or another that ails him, from the best hospital in tokyo no doubt. Modern medine for me, meta-medicine for you! No shame indeed. Whenever I go to gudni’s feed I see the guy’s nuttier by the day, which is also good therapy… especially since I hardly ever do it any more. These freaky caliphate people… Like hitler of course, FACT because of their extremist cultic religious underpinnings, are stirring up weird mystery school beliefs in me again, but I keep reminding myself that all manipulative leaders (I think I read this in the context of putin and his domestic media manipulation of the russian people) use a combination of truth, lies and outandish stories. Gudni is the master indeed!!! Anyway, cuddlesbear, u keep cuddling your very own self and I send my prayers to your family member too for spontaneous enlightenment and a quick walk to one of those venue exit signs. S

They do pressure you a lot once your in the inner circle, you just have to be stronger than they are to able to stand your ground and really KNOW THYSELF. I am writing from a personal experience.
Guilt and fear are the tools they use….it’s really sad. But it is what it is and people still fall for it.

  17. JLB is “an initiated teacher and healer through the Modern Mystery School which holds a 3000+ year old direct lineage tracing back to King Solomon.”

I would say Solomon would turn in his grave if he were aware that a conman uses his name to fool people into handing over large sums of money.

JLB’s argument is: “I ask you this, did the Disciples of Christ not have to give up everything to him? Jobs, families, friends, etc.. Do you call Jesus a Cultist? I don’t think so…”

Interesting wording JLB; I cannot remember ever reading that Christ asked his disciples to “give up everything to him”. You conjure a very peculiar picture; it was never my understanding that they handed over money or possessions to Christ. It was never my understanding that they cut themselves off from family and friends. It would have been catastrophic if followers handed over their possessions, house etc., where would their families live? Would Christ have condoned members of families, mostly breadwinners, to follow him and leave their loved ones destitute?

Every serious question I have asked the man about genuine occult topics that have some historical backing in the works of established authors and organizations he dodges the questions. He will give cliche and simple answers that don’t really answer the questions in an attempt to look wise in simplicity, but really it is just a tactic to hide his own ignorance.

  22. Anon – Healers Academy is not a good way to make money. They claim it is, but 99% of people who take it cannot make money. First of all, to take healers academy, you have to take a few other classes first (about $3,000 worth), and healers academy is $2000, plus a $500 TAN fee, plus airfare and hotel, and fees for tools ect – around $7,000+ just to get to this point and learn Life Activations. That’s the only thing you have to sell after all that, a silly healing that doesnt really do anything, that sounds weird, and is incredibly hard to sell to people. Also doesnt help, when you tell clients that after their Life Activation, they need to get initiated, and do all sorts of healings and classes….

Most students never make more then a few hundred bucks a year from activations (some never sell any), and the few that can make some profit from them spend all that money on MMS classes… It’s basically all a lie to make you think they will support you business wise, but basically, they make you do all the work of creating a business, while you pay them for things like TAN, antimony, and more classes. Plus, you have to follow all their rules and dogma, and if you dont stay current with going to mandatory temples that cost money, and with TAN payments, then you lose your “certification” with them, and apparently your life activations are no longer good enough. There are way way way better ways to make money without selling your soul.

    Donations & Fees

Dialogue Ireland is a unique organization that deals with a very specialised, if almost esoteric, subject. Most people rarely think about this subject, and only do so when a major event hits the media or when they, or a loved one close to them, become involved in a group that leads to a family crisis.

As a charity we do not charge for advice and information on the phone or through email anywhere in the world. We charge for private consultations in person or with organisations, and terms will be worked out prior to commencement of the work. We also charge for specific research projects on behalf of families, individuals or organisations.

However, as a charity, we will provide a service to those who have an inability to pay. We rely upon volunteer work (which can add up to hundreds of hours) and upon the financial support of donors such as you who make it possible for us to continue offering services to the community.

  31. The sales technique is not aggressive but rather a subtle suggestion. Your description of the teacher’s invitation to freely advertise on their behalf usually occurs at the end of relaxation/hypnosis and ‘far-out’ revelations. This is exactly what happened in the Tony Quinn Centre in Eccles Street. The ‘oracle’ takes control and leads the thought process of the ‘initiated’ to increase the numbers attending.

The subtle aggressive sell and control was also evident. One does not need to appear demanding or raise their voice to get what is required from the group.

The hard aggressive sell is mostly reserved for people who are already deeply involved or deemed sufficiently conditioned to accept it.

When I was with the school, unless we were in training to actually become teachers with the school ourselves or actually were Guides, they never ever tried to get us to recriut for them, let alone to force us into selling their classes for them. It was pretty unaggressive, and more like “Hey, if you know anyone who might be interested, and if you liked what you experienced, please tell people about us.” Seems like pretty standard lost leaders marketing to me…which is pretty standard for seminar selling. It’s actually worse when you go to a Tony Robbins, or Prepaid Legal symposium.

  43. I was in this school for a few years, and they are very controlling in a number of ways – there is a lot of fear and pressure. Scientology doesn’t force you to do anything, they use fear and pressure – sounds familiar? Almost everyone I’ve met in those years becomes more and more ego-driven and elitist, while estranging themselves to anyone not in the school. Even students of the school are awkward with each other – they are only comfortable when in the next class. If you don’t have cash – just use a credit card! Your debt will make you even more enslaved to us and the “old paradigm” worlds economy that we preach against!

  44. I got in this cult a few years ago when i was very vulnerable and it really messed me up. Fortunately they decided I wasn’t good recruiter material and they decided rsther to perform a scapegoating/expulsion ritual on me. Bad news … although I’m very grateful in retrospect because I got out of the cult!~ God was watching over me after all:)

  45. I ask you this, did the disciples of Christ not have to give up everything to him? Jobs, families, friends, etc.. Do you call Jesus a Cultist? I don’t think so…
Jim it’s very simple approach. Not a secret or a mystery.
    1. PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY
You are responsible for your own life. If you feel a call to this work, then work it. It may be for a short time, it may be for a long time. That’s your journey and your decision. The school is not responsible for your progression and how you do the work.

    2. BE DILIGENT
The reason they are “pushy” is because they know how much we like to make excuses. How many times have you had someone give you the time, money, energy excuses but turn around and invest it in other things that might not be the most important. So they do have a marketing mind set. The whole point of this is to get this out in society. So they do have marketing tools they use. For those it makes them feel pressured to the extent of divorce and bankrupt, refer to no. 1.
For others it helps them get off there butt and get moving.

    3. STEP INTO YOUR POWER
They teach you to step into your personal power. In order to do that would a good education not provide trials for that? I have whined and moaned over my situation of lack of abundance but when I took the initiative to contact admin I was given alternatives and opportunity to make it work. These people are open and willing to work with you but you must be willing to ask and get the answer you don’t want hear. But if you make them feel obligated to help they will teach you otherwise. Hence Know Thyself.

From my experience it’s like watching children. They want what tey want but they don’t want to work for it. How many people in are society expect everything to be handed to them. This life is about working for what we want. Toiling the earth for survival and gain. The school is not interested in people looking for a hand out or to be carried. They provide help where help is truly needed. Not for weak willed people to have their cake and eat it to.

Should it be free? I don’t think so. I don’t know of anyone getting it without great sacrifice. Today our sacrifice has a symbol. $$$. But in certain cases, bartering is still done. So if you want a insight from one who understands the concepts and system, let me know. I have been studying since 2002. I have seen alot and trust me, I have my opinions too but I am not buying an image, a cult, or a guru. I am buying tools and techniques that I have seen work in my life and others. How I use them and respond is my personal responsibility. If I have a hard time keeping my grip then I would seek out counsel from a therapist. Not blame others for where I am in my life.

  46. You raise some intriguing points regarding some of the activities of the school, the low points in people lives when they became involved, the costs associated, the number of bases they cover regarding a range of religious beliefs and the ritual/ceremonial aspects of the initiations. Would it be possible to give the story of how you became involved or your family members (respecting confidentiality of course) in order to give a fuller flavour of the methods and how people become convinced that this is the way for them. As you have said it is a gift open to all to receive God’s love and a privilege to share it so please explain if you know why the secrets and exorbitant costs.

  47. I was exposed to the Modern Mystery School while in a vulnerable place. Fortunately, when I was told to meditate and my guide would speak to me, the only message that rang repetitively and more loudly was ‘you are a child of God’. To God be the glory and thanks in showing me, once again, where the real power and spirituality is sourced. Again, thanks be to God! I was pulled from this school’s darkness and brought to the true light and salvation of the one true God/Higher Power, Jesus Christ, my Savior. I pray for family members involved and my sibling who sugarcoats what is going on with her children to keep favor in the family. As I am not an ordained minister, I shared my materials with a pastor and was told that it goes against biblical teachings and that the Bible warns us of such temptations rising to take us from God. All of the Modern Mystery School’s secret practices and ‘book’, which are not to be shared with anyone as only can be obtained by attending/paying at the class, are not at all associated with the Bible. They do their best to sell an association that pretty much attempts to cover all bases of possible objection. When in a vulnerable place looking for something to make sense or feel safe in life, one is prey for the Modern Mystery School. My family members were in crisis, not wellness, when they got involved. I’ve watched them transform to individuals carrying their own secretive collective state while doing parts of what they’ve learned without full disclosure on friends and family from a false sense of ‘enlightened’ being that feeds their egos and pocketbooks in associated services more than any true service to humankind. As someone else commented, I’ve watched some of their relationships fail and folks steer clear of them while rolling eyes. I also have visited, on several occasions, with friends who are open to alternative healing practices and well versed in many available options. One of them was asked to consider the Modern Mystery School and declined as it was not in alignment with her faith-based living or alternative health healing practices training and she posed a very good question. If their mission is to bring light and save humankind, then why is it not being done freely in actions and knowledge – why the secret book and avoidance to direct questions about the Modern Mystery School and their practices/beliefs. While I do not agree and am concerned for their well-being, I do respect their freedom of choice in this matter. However, if it is such an honorable thing, then my challenge is that they be forthright and honorable when bringing it to others in what they do around them or in services that are connected to the Modern Mystery School teachings but are not revealed as being so. I can appreciate the concern for this being a cult due to the secretive nature, the collective bond its followers protect, the pressure to continue paying very expensive fees to get to the ‘highest level’ in the Brotherhood and Sisterhood of the Light and be a ‘certified healer’, the ceremony of initiation using the black hexagonal cloth lined with candles, initiated members circling/chanting, the leader holding a sword to the sky to bring you ‘the light’ and dubb you with it in knight-like fashion. Perhaps it is their version of my religious practices in baptism, confirmation, communion, studying God’s word. The difference is that God’s word, His light, His healing, His power, His comfort, His grace, His forgiveness, His guidance, His salvation – are free – are a gift for anyone who wishes to receive it. There’s no ‘sugarcoating’ or ‘secretive’ behavior to lure anyone to God and you are not required to pay lots of money to get to the highest level to really be ‘good to go’ with God. It is a gift to receive God’s love and a privilege to share it – openly, honestly, freely.
