Deception and Control

“The only way to control people is to lie to them.” **

An extremely brutish statement, which in a few seconds, tells us all we need to know about L.Ron Hubbard and Scientology. Any normal person on hearing such a statement would simply walk away. However L.Ron Hubbard was safe in the knowledge that he had a captive audience. What kind of man would invent such a doctrine?

In November 2006, during our London conference, these words were brought to my attention. Consider the serious implications of this statement and how it has affected many thousands of Scientologists who, without doubt, believe everything that Hubbard has said. Most of his teachings have been discussed, written about and broadcast but I believe that this statement is seldom referred to. Lying, as taught by him, is accepted and encouraged and therefore is undoubtedly at the root of all the evils within Scientology. It is a vitally important point for any study on Scientology.

It is never possible to have a discussion on any subject, with anyone, whose deals in lies. The act of lying renders individuals far off and beyond any reasonable dialogue.

When truth is absent all avenues are closed. Hubbard would be fully aware of that when he promoted lying as an integral part of his “religious” teaching. He would know that his followers, by accepting his teaching on lying, would be separated from everything and everybody. It is perhaps the first thing that can be taken up and effectively used by parents and families to initiate discussion. It is superb ammunition as all other aspects of Scientology are second to that.

The destruction of the lives of the young combined with the suffering of their families, is one of the great risks in the world today. It is impossible to find reasons or excuses, for prominent figures in society, when they accept overtures of friendship from Scientology without exploring what they might be getting into. Their behaviour is mistaken and extremely damaging to their own lives, to extended families and friends, also to any one who might be unfortunate enough to find their behaviour credible. It is seriously damaging to young people who by admiration of celebrities are influenced by example.

It is disquieting that many individuals, some scholars, some important and high ranking people, even the police not so long ago, allow themselves to be so charmed by Scientology that the basic facts of Hubbard’s teachings escape them. They are flattered by offers of friendship and invitations to “come and see how wonderful Scientology is?” and they do not even pause to find out if there is anything they should know before accepting hospitality.

Just think for a moment “The only way to control people is to lie to them” and now insert the police into that niche. Before accepting entertainment and visits to East Grinstead, for example, should not at least one of them have done some detective work and, perhaps, discovered what Scientology actually is?

Who says that Scientology is a religion? Hubbard claimed it as a religion when he invented it. However we know, without doubt, that he was a self-proclaimed liar who said “The only way to control people is to lie to them.” So there we have a superb anomaly. Scientology as a religion has spread throughout the world and thousands of individuals are enslaved by their beliefs. Many families of converts to Scientology do accept, that in some obscure way, it is a religion. But if those people had first heard the statement “That the only way to control people is to lie to them” they would immediately be able to challenge the concept of Scientology as a religion. There can be no sensible explanation or defence of any religion which is based on lies.

It would seem likely that “The only way to control people is to lie to them” was first aired in private to a safe audience. Had it been said in public, I think it could have been his “Waterloo” which would have, effectively, shot him in the foot. It is tragic to think of young intelligent people, being so besotted, that they can accept such teaching.

I remember being in shock and facing the reality that I had two Scientologists in my family. Briefly at that time I thought it might be a religion. It was only when my brother-in-law said to me, “NO, this is evil!”, and my husband ran out of the house calling that he was going to find the Danish Ambassador, that I became speechless with fear and realized that we were all in alien territory.

Hubbard, a self confessed liar, was and is even now after his death, an ever present danger in the world. Many young people who, unfortunately have heeded his lying tongue, have never reverted to normality and many who have learned his techniques of abuse and lying have gone on to abuse others.

Hubbard was, I believe, deranged! To his converts during his lifetime he was their god and ultimately powerful. He was of course charming enough to be believable, for a period just long enough, for him to take control of their lives and for their families to enter a state of terror in which they fear to take any action, or say anything which might just make things worse. His legacy of fear and lies is successfully carried on every day by the believers of his lies.

His great ability to lie was all he needed in the building of his Church of Scientology. With the support of a few, who came under his spell, everything fell into place and deceit became his armour. Lying and the teaching of lying, rapidly followed by power, has made Scientology the scourge it is today. It is the lying which creates the power, which alienates the young from their nearest and dearest, causing grief and chaos within good families.

The initial period of deception and control is one aspect which should be recognised and feared by everyone within our education system. The subject (not only of
Scientology) should be part of a new school curriculum, which would make it impossible for anyone to be ignorant of dangers posed by Pseudo religions. Sadly at present, by the time families are made aware, that crucial time when something might have been done, will have passed. That of course is absolutely deliberate, making it always too late for families to discover the truth, before their children are destroyed.

Most parents are, at first, confused and have difficulty trying to understand what has happened. In most cases they can not imagine that they are being lied to. I was one of those parents. I would never have believed that my children were indoctrinated by lies. But they were!

Many academics and students of cults have produced books, essays, scholarly statements on various “faiths” and forms of cult involvement. I appreciate those works, or should I say, I appreciate some of those works. However I do believe that some scholars, in this field, have concealed (perhaps not deliberately) the salient and valuable facts over the years. Only occasionally, have I heard it boldly stated that LRH was a liar, and that lying and deception is the ground base of Scientology.

I do believe that the cult apologists of this world, who persist in recognising “faith”, in whatever form it is promoted, have been and are responsible for much of the misery within families. Many, not all, scholars of cultism, have managed to convey a mystique of religion and scholarship and they have been complimented for it. This has created a false base for study which is an insult to common intelligence.

You as taxpayers in the UK, are supporting a Government sponsored body which in a forthcoming conference, features Graeme Wilson as one of the speakers. This body has been paid, over many years, thousands perhaps millions of taxpayers money, FOR WHAT? To promote cults in the UK and perhaps in other countries?

I once stated in conversation, that a certain academic’s work, in my opinion, did not serve any useful purpose. The response to that was that my opinions were not important and that I must primarily admire the scholarship. Well, I don’t! Lives have been and are being ruined and much of the scholarship has done nothing to ease the continuing tragedy of lives being wasted. I must say at this point that there are, as you all know, scholars who have tried to be objective and helpful and those I do admire.

It would have helped me greatly during one of the worst periods of my life, had I first been told that “Scientology is a group which first and foremost promotes lying”. Instead of which I was given books, papers, telephone numbers of many people. All useful contacts but none gave me the one thing which I should have been told immediately, which was, “The leader of Scientology teaches and promotes lying AND he teaches that skill to his recruits”.

Had I known that, I would have been better equipped to deal with our problem.
I was told what not to say, what not to do, and “do be careful not to criticise Scientology, you might offend your daughters and make things worse”. What a joke! Things could not have been worse. When families are in the grip of deception it CAN NOT BE WORSE!

Some things continually trouble me. First; the realization that the cult problem has escalated almost unhindered during the past 30 odd years. Also that it has acted as a job creation scheme for many, who have managed to make things even more dangerous than they already are. Second; I still grapple with the enigma that so many cult leaders, have been allowed to stride around the free world and create havoc, ill health and, in some cases, death.

To return to the original statement “The only way to control people is to lie to them”. From the earliest years most normal people recognise the fact that to lie is wrong. If you tell one lie you then have to tell another and this axiom needs no explanation. Yet here we have lies which have been used to inculcate, enslave and achieve success for what can only be described as a bogus organisation. Hubbard such a powerful person, with the ability to captivate and control very intelligent people who can remain so for many years. He brought misery to the world and caused it to be a much more risky place than it was before his entered it. Unfortunately he is not alone in that.

Many reasons exist to explain how and why Hubbard has endangered the world but one fact remains, that young people, who leave home as free citizens and are eager to listen and learn, can be approached and rapidly processed before anyone can help them. They are then changed from bright young things into the slaves of a liar. The greater tragedy is that they then become liars, live in a false illusion and are strangers to reality. What price freedom of religion!

Any parents who are under the illusion that all they need to do is to point out the wrongs of this organisation, or perhaps give their children books to read, are living within a trap which has been deliberately set for them. Scientology (and the other cults), watching from afar, want parents to do this. The first goal must be to tackle the web of lies which protects their children from them.
