SUPREME MASTER CHING HAI (from 2005)

SUPREME MASTER CHING HAI

The “Supreme Master Ching Hai” visited
Ireland recently and gave a seminar entitled: “Immediate Enlightenment, Eternal Liberation”. The event took place in the main hall of the RDS. It was well publicized both through street posters and substantial ads in national newspapers, highlighting the news that “Heaven is here and now!” and inviting the Irish public to “see God while living”. Approximately 1000 people turned up to hear and see Ms. Ching Hai, a Chinese-Vietnamese woman who appeared in evening dress on the flower-bedecked stage. She connected easily with her audience, even inviting those who were seatless to share her space and her cushions onstage. Her informality was in stark contrast to the dozens of mainly oriental-looking minders in business suits, who silently monitored the proceedings – some of the hundred or so disciples who accompanied her on a lecture tour of Europe.

The content of Ching Hai’s address was part Buddhist, part Hindu, but given a New Age twist in, for example, her insistence that the term ‘Christ’ refers not to a person, but to a power that emanates from God and manifests the authority of God in exceptionally enlightened individuals. With a touch that seemed to owe something to Wordsworth’s poem Ode on the Intimations of Mortality, she explained that when we are born, we may remember past existences. As we grow, things crowd round, and we lose the vision of God which we had when we left heaven. Then, going far beyond Wordsworth, she reasoned that if God lives in here (pointing to her heart), logically one should be able to see him at any time – “we just have to know where to direct our attention. Seeing (the Light of God) is believing”. Consequently, she declared: “I am offering proof of God’s existence”. This proof however, is evident only to those who have been initiated into what she terms the “Quan Yin Method” of meditation.

“Quan Yin” is the name of a goddess, the most popular in China. Worshipped both by Buddhists and Taoists, Quan Yin is represented as a female figure with many arms to signify her generosity towards her devotees. She is particularly favoured by women who pray to her for the birth of a son. However, the “Quan Yin Method” of meditation bears little relationship to the traditional simple prayers and offerings made to the goddess. While reluctant to explain the method to the uninitiated, Ching Hai did indicate in replies to questions from the audience that it involves turning our attention inwards to listen to God – something we have forgotten in the course of our busy lives. During meditation one will hear musical sounds, such as that of the bagpipe. Quan Yin meditation is practised with one’s attention focused on the ‘third eye’ centre, located in the middle of the forehead. This, she said, is the wisdom centre and the highest gateway for leaving one’s body. However, the technique should be learned properly and practised correctly. She warned of the danger of focusing on any chakras or centres of energy without proper guidance. That guidance is given during the process of initiation into the method. All present were invited to take initiation there and then. About 100 people took up the offer. Some underwent full initiation which involves a life-long commitment to a vegan diet and at least two hours meditation daily, as well as refraining from all alternative forms of meditation and other spiritual practice. Others received the “quick initiation” or “Convenient Method”, requiring a half-hours meditation daily and abstinence from meat for ten days each month.

WHO IS CHING HAI?

Ms. Ching Hai is a talented and energetic woman, evident in the displays round the hall of paintings, jewelry, Chinese lanterns and fashion – all designed by herself and available for purchase. Also on sale were her videos, CDs, tapes and books. A magazine and a booklet of her talks were available for free. Proceeds of sales are used to fund charitable activities and disaster relief in various parts of the world. Ching Hai was brought up as a Catholic, but learnt the rudiments of Buddhism from her grandmother. However, in a brief autobiography she explains that her significant spiritual experience came about as a result of time spent in the
Himalayas where she discovered “the Quan Yin Method and the Divine Transmission”. Nowhere in the movement’s literature is any mention made of how she came upon this enlightenment. Upon enquiring as to who Ching Hai’s teacher was, one of her retinue replied vaguely: “Kutaji – he lives in a cave in the Himalayas – maybe he has left his body now.” Such reticence in regards to the identity of one’s initiating guru is quite unusual among Oriental religious teachers and begs the question as to the true origins of Ching Hai’s teaching. Some clues are however to be found in the language that the Supreme Master uses in her writings and talks.

There are notable similarities between Ching Hai’s philosophy and that of the surat shabd or “sound and light” yogic tradition of Northern India. This tradition is represented at its best in the Radha Soami movements of Agra and Beas. Julian Johnson’s book, The Path of the Masters is the classical English language source for the philosophy and teachings of the Radha Soamis. Comparing it with Ching Hai’s writings reveals significant features common both to the Radha Soamis and Ching Hai. These are: the requirement to practise long hours of meditation under the direction of the Master; the emphasis on the Master himself/herself as the object of meditation; the practice of meditation at the “third eye”; the idea of spiritual progression through a number of ascending planes or levels of consciousness; the prediction that the meditator will see inner light and hear inner sounds, particularly musical sounds; the ability to leave the body at will during meditation and explore the astral world.

Former disciples of Ching Hai have alleged that disciples are taught to meditate with a blanket over their heads. This practice – unknown to the Radha Soamis – tends to induce drowsiness which makes people more susceptible to mind-control. It has also been reported that disciples were strongly encouraged by Ching Hai herself to put together a six-figure donation towards U.S. President Clinton’s personal legal defence fund.

  1. The Quan Yin Method taught by the Ching Hai cult consists of two parts, light and sound. Initiates are told to do each part in proportion of 1.5 hours of light and 1 hour of sound.

At the Quan Yin initiation of the group this is what they teach:

    Sound part of method
    ——-
Go into a completely squatting position with your elbows resting on your legs, or sitting on with a table with the elbows on the table, then block the ears with the thumbs inserted in them and the palms on head, do not put any fingers on the third eye (that is around the center of the forehead). Concentrate on the third eye and you should then hear some sounds. At the initiation they say don’t let anyone see you doing this part of the method and quite often during group meditation initiates would cover themselves with a sheet or blanket while doing it. Ignore any sounds from the left, behind or below as they may be from Ghosts or demons, concentrate only sounds coming from the front, right and above. You’ll hear ‘heavenly’ sounds which would be things like a harp, bells, whistles, flute, bagpipe, etc… To increase the chance of hearing sounds sit in the squat position, another thing you can do to increase the likelihood of success in this method is keeping the left thumb fully inserted while having the right thumb inserted but not fully.

There are 5 levels of which you’ll hear sounds from, sounds at each level may include:

    5th Level – Trumpet
    4th Level – Flute
    3rd Level – Harp, guitar
2nd Level – Sea tide sound or temple bells, church bells
    1st Level – Bells, wind

  2. The ching hai cult teach a meditation to new members called that they call the Quan Yin Method.

The Quan Yin method of the Supreme Master Ching Hai Association consists of two parts, light and sound. Initiates are told to do each part in proportion of 1.5 hours of light and 1 hour of sound.

At the Quan Yin initiation of the group this is what they teach of the light part of the method:

    Light part of method
    ——-

There are 5 initial regions (dimensions) of the Universe, the physical, the emotional, the mental, a void, and then God (their belief), and each region has it’s own God as they call them and to get passed that region to reach the 5th level for this meditation you have to recite the name of that region’s ruler.

The five names that the group calls the five holy names are:

    Jot-Nir-ran-yan (Physical region) – j is pronounced like y
Onkar (Emotional region) – the k is between g and k
    Rarankar (Mental region)
Sohang (Void) – don’t over pronounce the g
    Satnam (God)

Concentrate on the third eye which is around the center of the forehead and look in front of you (inside) through your third eye and recite the 5 holy names waiting a slight moment before saying the next name. Say each names stretched almost like you’re singing it.

  5. In Bhagavad-Gita Lord SriKrishna says to Arjuna:
“I taught this immortal Yoga to Vivasvan (sun-god), Vivasvan conveyed it to Manu(his son), and Manu imparted it to (his son) Iksvaku. Thus transmitted to succession from father to son, Arjuna, this Yoga remained known to the Rajarisis (royal sages). It has however long since disappeared from this earth. The same ancient Yoga has this day been imparted to you by Me, because you are My devotee and friend, and also because this is a supreme secret”.
At this Arjuna said: You are of recent origin while the birth of Vivasvan dates back to remote antiquity. How, then, I am to believe that you taught this Yoga at the beginning of creation? Lord SriKrishna said: Arjuna, you and I have passed through many births. I remember them all, you do not remember.
    1. Radha Soami Faith was founded by His Holiness Param Purush Puran Dhani Huzur Soamiji Maharaj on the prayer of His Holiness Huzur Maharaj who later on became second Spiritual Head of Radha Soami Faith. The prime object of the Radha Soami Faith is the emancipation of all Jeevas (Souls) i.e. to take the entire force of consciousness to its original abode. There is a tradition of succession of Gurus or Spiritual Adepts in Radha Soami Faith. I am one of them as is evident from the following facts or ….
“My most Revered Guru of my previous life His Holiness Maharaj Sahab, 3rd Spiritual Head of Radhasoami Faith had revealed this secret to me during trance like state.
HE told me, “Tum Sarkar Sahab Ho” (You are Sarkar Sahab). Sarkar Sahab was one of the most beloved disciple of His Holiness Maharj Sahab. Sarkar Sahab later on became Fourth Spiritual Head of Radhasoami Faith.
Since I don’t have any direct realization of it so I can not claim the extent of its correctness. But it seems to be correct. During my previous birth I wanted to sing the song of ‘Infinite’ (Agam Geet yeh gawan chahoon tumhri mauj nihara, mauj hoi to satguru soami karoon supanth vichara) but I could not do so then since I had to leave the mortal frame at a very early age. But through the unbounded Grace and Mercy of my most Revered Guru that desire of my past birth is being fulfilled now.”

THE NEURAL SURFER’S TOP FIVE LIST OF SCUM BAG GURUS
    http://elearn.mtsac.edu/philosophy/gurufile.htm

Or, Gurus You Would NOT Bring Home to Mother

    February 1996 List

    1. Thakar Singh (If you think blindfolding children under the age of
five for years is spiritual; if you think beating up American women
is conducive for meditation; if you think initiating anybody is
enlightened; if you think sexually molesting female disciples is
helpful to burn off karma…. then Thakar is the guru for you.
Personally, I would take ten Twitchell’s and five L. Ron Hubbard’s
    instead of this charlatan.

    2. Ching Hai (Initiated by Thakar Singh in the early 1980’s but
continually denies any connection. Instead she claims that some
Himalayan guru, who only had one disciple (her), initiated her into
the secrets of surat shabd yoga. When asked where this guru lived,
Ching Hai hassles the questioner. Just take a look at her diary forms
for initiates and the diary forms that Thakar Singh uses…. She is
doing a Twitchellian Pose for the 1990s.)

    3. John-Roger Hinkins (Yea, I know, he robbed my house, but I would
rather be stuck with J.R. than Thakar…. John-Roger Hinkins has also
been known infamously as the “Divine Rump Ranger” [You want to
achieve God consciousness? You need a rectal reem rod session with
the Mystical Traveler.] Check out McWilliams book, LIFE 102–the best
anti-cult book written in the last decade.)

    4. Adi Da (Oops, or was that Da Avabhasa, Da Free John, Love-Ananda,
Franklin Jones, or Just the Most Spoiled Guru to Come out of New
York? Great writer, no doubt, but hey lose some pounds big guy or
that island in Fiji is going to sink. Moreover, when did wife abuse
    become a form of puja?)

    5. Fredrick Lenz (Rama? Just read your book, Surfing the Himalayans,
and didn’t realize that snowboarding could freeze so many neurons at
once. Amazingly lame text makes one yearn for Rod McKuen poetry….
But who cares about writing, just take a few drops of L.S.D. and hit
on emotionally vulnerable women and say that having sex with Rama is
like connecting with God…. And to think that this guy got a Ph.D.
    in English from SUNY?)

The Ex Satsangi Site also has a hundred more posts on ching hai (a few from her ex-initiates) as well as other shady shabd yoga gurus.

  7. Here’s a blog of a (former?)member of ching hai’s cult who was involved with their supreme master television station.

The whole letter is pasted here.

    The Letter.

“This was a letter that I wrote to her, but I am not sure where to email it to. Since the master doesn’t have an accessible email account for the general public or her initiates to use to contact her. Oh wait, we have the direct contact! Contacting Supreme Master ching hai! Your members in SMTV are conducting fraud on every possible level!

To Supreme Master Ching Hai, et al.

I have put off writing this letter to you and foreign group for some time believing that I was the sole case of marriage fraud. However, I have learned that more than once SMTV, the broadcasting station that purposively promotes positive work, are also practicing shady methods to retain foreign workers here in the United States. I know two others, other than myself who were contacted and brought over for that. A close friend and another who was asked to have a divorce so that both could have marriage fraud to get people from foreign countries to stay in America to work here, is what I have just said. FRAUD.
Curiosity piqued, I went online and did an online search and found that there were others who fell for the “calling.” SMTV contacted us first informing us of doing simple jobs, but when we arrived there it was for marriage.
I will only elaborate on my experience, as it is mine that I can discuss. I was first contacted on November 17th 2007, for inquiries on work Visas. At first I thought it was akin to just a contact for working in the United States. Thinking that was all, I later received another email whether or not I could come to LA to work. I was only informed to bring my camera and nice clothing. The date would have been on December 9th 2007. With such short notice, I took off from work without pay in order to go to Los Angeles thinking that I would be able to work for SMTV.

My initial contact details: “hi (keeping my name out),
Can you come to LA next Friday or Wednesday? Better to come before thanksgiving otherwise it will be crowded. If you can, you will need a suit and 10 different shirts (nice ones). And bring your digital camera.”
I left to work at SMTV with the belief that I was being told the honest truth and would be photographing things for SMTV.
The story changed when I got there. I was not told who to expect or when I would be picked up till the driver got there. When the driver picked me up, I was informed of what I would really be doing. Getting married to a girl from Australia so she could stay here to work permanently for SMTV. I am pretty sure the premise of this faith and SMTV was positive work and honesty. How can that be when SMTV has tried to commit marriage fraud, and continues to do so?
You can only imagine the emotions I went through during that day. I went from being impatient to confused to furiously angry to emotionally distraught. To be told that I would be marrying someone who I didn’t know, loved, or even seen at all, instead of what was initially informed me what I would be doing is deceitful and betrayal. I immediately booked a car rental to go down to San Diego to my parents’ friends to stay for the week, as that was how long I would be in California.
I still have the emails from the beginning and ending, emails pleading with me not to send this to Foreign group or to Master. I thought to myself, that this was only once. Sad and disastrous as it was, maybe they changed after I sent them a promo letter to them of what I would be sending to you. After that email, I received an email lecturing me that I should not have worried about getting the marriage and that sort. And I decided to take a forlorn break from the practice, which I still am on.
The response to the letter that would have been sent: “Please make sure that you or anyone else does not send any letter of that sort to foreign group. This is extremely grave. You MUST make sure that (anonymous) keeps his cool and anyone else who wants to challenge or follow that route. Please do do do remind. DO NOT SEND THAT LETTER!!!!! You bear a tremendous weight if you do! And if anyone else tries to do so, they bear an extraordinary weight. Please have respect for the people here, and those who serve God. NO EGO! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE REMIND!!! DO NOT SEND!!!!! EXTREMELY GRAVE!!!!! MAKE SURE ERIC DOESN’T BLOW a CAP!!!! NO LETTER TO FOREIGN GROUP!!!!! Otherwise DEADMEAT and worse!!! CONTACT (anonymous)!!!!!!!!! HE MUST BE AWARE!!!!!!”
I didn’t want SMTV to be blown off kilter, because at the time I believed that I was the only one and I still believed in the general premise of SMTV. So I decided that, might have shook them up. I was naïve.
Until two days ago of present, I thought that my debacle was the only event. But a close friend of mine went through the same ordeal and another friend was asked persistently to get a divorce from his marriage so that he and his wife could marry foreigners to stay here to work permanently. And then I found this online from countless sites that had topics on Marriage fraud. I took it with some grain of salt, however, it displays that this has been going on for some time. Which makes me wonder if you, Master or Foreign group, knows exactly what goes on with your heavily promoted supreme master television.

“Many similar marriage fraud occurred within the SupremeMasterTV.com organization whose address is at 1431 N. Potrero ave, El monte, Ca 91733. SupremeMasterTV.com is an internet base and satellite television program claimed to show positive news especially advocate of prevent global warming. SupremeMasterTV.com (SMTV.com ) is an non-profit operation headed by the Supreme Master Ching Hai who also has a company called The Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association. Many fraudulent marriage committed by volunteers of SMTV.com to keep the foreign volunteers to work for SMTV.com and also for One World Restaurant in West Covina (illegal alien work here). This Russian girl’s case is a good example but SMTV.com volunteers-crimers believe that they won’t get caught because Supreme Master Ching Hai has the magic power to protect them. Probably USCIS need to catch more cases like this to stop people from committing marriage fraud.

Around topics on the discussion of marriage fraud, posts and discussions of this is highly prevalent. Although those are not from accredited journalists, they are from users who know or have experienced marriage fraud conducted by yours truly, Supreme Master Television.
Then there is the mentality of your members there that is also in question. How do you really promote good will, when your workers there consider anyone who does not work for SMTV as trash or in such disdain? How do you pertain positive change when your workers are informing those that may have second thoughts that those that did leave have suddenly died? I acknowledge that workers that left suddenly die as exaggeration, but that is fear tactics. So SMTV not only conducts marriage fraud to get workers to stay, but reinforces it with fear tactics?
The conducts of your workers at SMTV are disdainful and deleterious and should be examined by yourself or foreign group, let alone the US authorities. This kind of conduct generates much question to yours and your affiliates’ judgment and activity and I am hoping that there is resolution to this.
Whether this being resolved or not, is paramount to your organization because if left unresolved it opens up a Pandora’s box of troubles. Not only to you, but also mainly to the victims, such as myself, who see no justice being done to rectify this horrendous deed. The authorities already investigate marriage fraud on a countless basis.

    Yours truly,”
